Announcement of new Mission Centre President/

Mission Centre Financial Officer

Susan Oxley

12 May 2014

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to announce that Stephen Thompson of Edmonton has been appointed as the new Mission Centre President/Mission Center Financial Officer for Canada West Mission. Stephen will begin his duties on July 1, 2014. Until then, please continue to work with Field Apostolic Assistant Carman Thompson presently serving in the interim role as Mission Centre President/Financial Officer. Carman and Steve will be in dialogue to insure a smooth transition of responsibilities, with Greg Goheen available for consultation on past issues as needed.

Please offer your support and ministry to Steve as he prepares for this responsibility. Your efforts to work as a team, cooperatively focusing on the mission of Jesus Christ and empowering the congregations of Canada West in their witness and outreach, will bring blessings to people both within and beyond the current membership of the Community of Christ.

I personally look forward to sharing in ministry with Steve Thompson, and pray for God’s continued guidance and grace in his life.

Apostle Susan D. Oxley

Young Adult Retreat Hills of Peace

June 13-15

Young Adult picture

Hills of Peace Friday, June 13 – 6:30 pm to Sunday, June 15 – noon

Guest Minister: Alfredo Zelaya-Martinez from Canada East

I’m a Christian Young Adult … now what?

We’ve grown up in the church but what is the next step? What does worship and participation look like for young adults? How do we reinvent our understanding of God and Christ-like community for today’s young adults?

The Young Adult Retreat is an opportunity for YOU to re-experience camp at Hills of Peace. There will be plenty of time to reconnect with old friends, cultivate new ones, fellowship, discuss our role in the church community and eat awesome food.

Participants, 19 – 27 years must have “aged out” of the youth programs in order to attend (you are no longer eligible for Sr High Camp, SPEC, etc.)

Director: Caitlin Ball or 403-836-8181

Registration by June 6 would be appreciated.

Ribstone Enrichment Weekend

Canada West Youth Camp – June 30-July 5

If you or someone you know would love to come to camp – be sure to let us know! This camp is for those completed grades 7-12. 2014 Directors are Tyler Baines and Rachelle Smalldon.

Ages 18 and older are invited to come as leaders in training or staff! We really need your help on staff for this youth camp (particularly males)! If you can come – contact Rachelle Smalldon at

If you can't come personally, but would like to donate funds (either individually or as a congregation) so we can bring in other staff so our youth camp can be successful, that is also very helpful! Just contact Rachelle Smalldon ( to coordinate donations!

Hope to hear from you! Thanks!

Attention Canada West Mission youth ages 16 - 21. You're invited to participate in the Get God Project. All successful participants will get to travel to an international destination with the team at the end of the year! The destination changes each year, but wherever we end up, you'll be able to share your experiences with the other participants, worship in a beautiful setting, and celebrate your accomplishments of the past year.

Our Goals are:

Goals Setting

The selection process is not necessarily based on what you are currently doing in the church, but it may help. What you want to do, and are willing to do are of great importance too. There are only 15 spaces available each year, so we recommend you apply early.

Your Commitment

We want you to create your own personalized program. We realize that between work, school and other activities, you have a specific schedule and window of availability. So tell us what you're able to do for you local congregation or community. We're looking for fresh and unique ideas for outreach. (introduce youth and young adults to church, church programs, church activities and camping) So tell us what you would do. Put together a plan for outreach and a commitment to your congregation that will fit into your schedule. The plan should be something that is manageable over a 12 month period as a small monthly or weekly youth oriented activity at your church or in your community, or it could be 2 or 3 larger scale 'one-off' activities.

Remember that a single event is great for introducing a congregation to our community, but a sustainable and ongoing activity allows your community to get to know us. We'll expect you to set goals, participate in a monthly meeting via skype, meet monthly with your mentor and keep a journal, but the rest is up to you.

P.S. If you need ideas for projects, we have a page of those online too!

Our Commitment

Canada West Mission staff commit to helping you through every phase of this program. We want you to grow as people and leaders. The benefits to you and your congregation should be great - actually phenomenal. We commit to having leaders in place to assist you, and our monthly meetings via skype will give you the opportunity to share your successes and questions. This is a team effort, we want you to succeed and we commit to doing our best to help you achieve your goals.
