From the Canadian Peace and Justice Committee:

As you may know World Church is wanting congregations to align their activities under the five Mission Initiatives.  Mission Initiatives

Here is an excellent way to start doing that for any congregation that serves coffee.  Normally coffee would be a “Maintenance or kitchen expense.”  But if a congregation heartpurchases fair trade coffee, then you can take that expense and move it under the “Abolish Poverty, End Suffering” Initiative, because that is exactly what fair trade does – it helps coffee farmers break the cycle of poverty.  Thus by spending very little extra, your congregational budget automatically aligns with that critical Mission Initiative.  For the sake of impoverished coffee farmers around the world, we hope you will consider that wherever possible.

A second step that anyone can take is a follow-up to the letter that was sent by the entire Canadian church regarding the labeling of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).  Specifically, you can sign a petition encouraging the adoption of a bill in Parliament devoted to precisely that purpose.  Go to the Peace/Justice website (www.CofChristPeaceJustice.ca, or simply go the Canadian website and click on the Peace/Justice badge) and in the Latest News box you will see a link to the action.  Informed choice is such a basic step, and yet we in Canada are not even at that stage yet regarding GMOs.  Please consider helping nudge things along.

Get back to me if you have any questions, etc.

Thanks,

The Weekly Wire for October 17, 2012

What’s New

You may have noticed over the past few weeks that I’ve replaced the Video Teaser with a photo slideshow set to music of the Men’s Retreat and a Thanksgiving tribute.  You seem to like it because our number of views has more than doubled, in fact the Men’s Retreat ‘video’ has been viewed almost 500 times!

In light of this, we’ve decided to place the Video Teaser on the backburner for now and focus my time on putting together photo slideshows of your events, activities, retreats and more.  But there’s a catch…isn’t there always?  I need LOTS of photos and each photo should be 1MB or larger so it doesn’t look grainy in the video.  Also, it would really help if you’d label each photo, or at the very least label the group of them with ‘Men’s Retreat 2012’ or ‘Fine Arts Retreat 2013’.  The individual titles are very handy when I’m preparing an edition of ‘What’s Up…In the CWM’ so I can be sure the photo matches the story.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the great photos of your events, and so is everyone else!

It's a slower week for announcements, so here's

something I thought might tickle you...

Church ladies with typewriters.

These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS & TYPOS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

(not in the CWM of course)

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.

--------------------------

The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.'

--------------------------

Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

--------------------------

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you.

--------------------------

Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

--------------------------

Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

--------------------------

For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

--------------------------

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

--------------------------

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

--------------------------

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

--------------------------

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice.

--------------------------
Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.
--------------------------

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

--------------------------
Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.
--------------------------

The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.

--------------------------

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.

--------------------------

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

--------------------------

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

--------------------------

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM . All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. Is done.

--------------------------

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.

--------------------------

Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.

--------------------------

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

--------------------------

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

--------------------------

The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new campaign slogan last Sunday: 'I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All are encouraged to prayerfully prepare for World Conference. The First Presidency asks the church to prayerfully study the book Christ’s Mission Is Our Mission, by Peter A. Judd, individually and in groups so we can approach Conference spiritually prepared and focused on the mission of Jesus Christ. With its thought-provoking chapters and the wealth of discussion questions, this is wonderful material for a church-school class or study group. Order yours through Herald House at www.HeraldHouse.org or 1-800-767-8181.

Twelve lessons are being created by Carolyn Brock, Spiritual Formation and Wholeness Ministries, to go along with the book and assist with people’s preparation. Available in the Disciple Formation Guide, the lessons will also be linked from the World Conference website at www.CofChrist.org/WC2013.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The series on Community of Christ theological foundations continues in the Herald with an article on “Holy Spirit.” While the Holy Spirit blesses individuals with guidance, it also guides the disciple community through questions and shared experiences as we faithfully seek God’s will together.

Each article explores theological foundations based on Community of Christ vision, mission, Enduring Principles, and Basic Beliefs. The Community of Christ Statement of Sexual Ethics (www.CofChrist.org/ethics; June Herald) was built on these foundations. The purpose of the draft ethics statement, coupled with these reflection articles, is to encourage open and honest conversation in the church about sexual ethics.

Read the series in the Herald or sign up for the e-subscription at www.CofChrist.org/subscribe.asp to have the articles, with spiritual practices and reflection questions, delivered to your e-mail. To subscribe to the Herald, visit www.HeraldHouse.org or contact subscriptions@HeraldHouse.org or 1-800-767-8181. In addition to study and discussion, the First Presidency invites your feedback.
