Reality Misconception (Part 1)

It has been said, it takes hearing or reading something five to seven times before the message really remembered and understood. This is clearly related to a multitude of factors beyond the scope of this paper. When the topic is extremely important to most people, it is worth repeating several times.

Currently, it is estimated less than 30 percent of the Canadian population has a "true pension plan". This is not a concern for Canadians but one of many social tragedies we are facing. Canadians are confused as to what a "true pension plan" really is. People will have TFSA's, Group RSP's, Defined Contribution Plans, non registered investments, Deferred Pension Plans and believe they are well positioned. None of these are a "true pension plan". Until this situation is clarified you might be a victim of "Reality Misconception" which could negatively affect your financial world and lifestyle during retirement.

A "TRUE PENSION PLAN" contains two essential elements: 1) A GUARANTEED income stream. 2) A income stream which will last your entire lifetime OR said another way, you can never outlive your money!

Everything else that does not have these two essential elements, are just financial accumulation products. In and of itself, having these accumulation plans can be a good thing, but there not a "true pension plan". So what does this mean to you and what are the ramifications? First, FULL AWARENSS of what you really have relative to a "true pension plan". Once you clearly understand your situation and product(s), further options can be explored. So while you may not be one of the fortunate few with a gold plated pension (primarily but not exclusively civil servants, teachers, funded by our tax dollars!) there is hope for a sound retirement income.

Why should you care? Simple, it is your quality of life, freedom and comfort which not only affects you but also your family. For sure, CPP, OAS and guaranteed income supplement will provide a foundation of income but these were never intended to provide a lavish or even moderate lifestyle. The intent was always for the individual to supplement their own retirement via company pension plans or your own retirement financing. So should you want a retirement lifestyle you can enjoy and not worry about running out of money , then you should care. Bottom line, it is up to you, the planning and choices you make throughout life which will determine the quality of your retirement.

In future articles, we will look at the significance of retirement planning, how to view the products you might have and how these can be utilized to benefit your retirement.
