Saskatchewan Homecoming is undergoing a change this year.  As Roger Wolsey is known internationally for his book "Kissing Fish", we are opening this event to the public as well as the CWM membership. There will still be plenty of opportunity for us to fellowship together.  Space is limited, so please register with Dan Woynarski as soon as you can.

Community of Christ Career Networking

Net Connect

For those of you who are on LinkedIn or want to be (easy to join) we have set up a Canadian Community of Christ private LinkedIn group to assist in employment opportunities through our collective networking for and with one another. The group is called "Community of Christ Net Connect." Search for it on LinkedIn and request membership.

Many Young Adults and others are unemployed, under-employed, going through career changes, health changes, re-locations, or other challenges. We can be part of the answer in their lives.

We have the capacity to make a difference through our mutual networking together. The full capability of this group is just beginning to unfold. Join us and we will create a new model of interaction that will bless us all.

Thanks.

Looming Financial Concern: Part 1

Years ago, I visited with a family who I will call, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Doe. Emmett worked for the same company for close to 40 years without missing a day of work. The Doe Family, now empty nesters, has been struggling financially for years. Mrs. Doe was a stay at home Mom so she does not have a company pension. Emmett worked steady for years with the same company but the company he worked for had NO RETIREMENT arrangement in place. With only government pensions to rely on, it is not enough to provide a financially comfortable retirement. Emmett said “working for 40 years with the same company, has got to count for something?”. Unfortunately, in Emmett’s situation, it counted for nothing. With no retirement plan to participate in, there was no future financial benefit to receive.

This same story will unfold many times in the future all over North America as current generations reach retirement age. A short historical review is in order. The years from 1950 to roughly the year 2000, brought changes in retirement plans in the work force. Depending on the country of residence, retirement plans are known by a variety of names such as; 401K, 403B, Group IRA, Group RSP, DPSP, etc. There are generally two categories of plans. Defined Benefit Pension Plans, where the outcome of a person’s pension amount could be determined in advance, are no longer popular. This style of plan is considered too costly and burdensome to the employer. Defined Contribution Plans are less costly to operate and administer. Both types of plans can provide a pension for the employee however the Defined Benefit Plan shifts the burden of “guarantee” away from the company to the employee.

As we move forward in time, from approximately 1990 onward, we have a different set of dynamics in place. Many companies no longer offer any type of retirement arrangement or scaled back on what was previously offered. Contract, part time and seasonal workers, are typically not eligible to participate in company retirement plans, should a plan exist. Another factor in this is scenario, is how governments and politically parties view the retirement plans. Their policies can help protect or enable the dismantling of existing plans. Today, MANY EMPLOYEES are not included in any retirement arrangement and might never be during their working years. This places a huge burden on them to maintain a reasonable standard of living today and be solely responsible for funding all their retirement needs. This brings into play the need for financial stewardship/planning and estate planning as they are interrelated. Without proper planning during a person’s working life, in addition to the lack of a formal company/work retirement plan, they will not have sufficient financial resources to sustain them throughout their retirement.

This will certainly make the retirement age for many people later than they might have originally planned, jeopardize an affordable retirement and increase their need to work part time to supplement their income. So we are facing an ongoing financial crisis related to retirement issues which will become more dramatic in the future for today’s employees and our society.

So what can the average worker do? Read Part 2 next month!Ken McGowan 2a
