Men’s Retreat Hills of Peace

Because I copied last year’s invite I know that this is the 9th  annual attempt and for those that care, only Jay Senga and Gregg Lester have attended all of the previous years. I like to keep things simple (fill in your own joke or provide a real life example) so this year the men’s retreat will be at Hill’s of Peace and it will be the last weekend in September – September 26-28. It kicks off at about 8 on Friday night, with a couple of games, followed by snacks. Saturday morning starts with a short worship or if you sleep in, it starts with breakfast (more eating). This year for an added benefit, the cook tells me we will be eating a bigger than usual lunch and supper will be a lot of meat and a lot of pie. Interspersed around the gluttony will be four sessions hosted by our guest minister, Kerry Richards. Kerry is a man on a mission, which is fortunate since he is very actively engaged in helping congregations across Canada become mission-focused. For an upbeat, optimistic guy he has picked an interesting topic “Why Do Men Hate Church and how Can We Change That ?”

Saturday night will be the usual “low-key” campfire (issued to calm down risk management) followed by cards, guitar playing, and probably a couple of rounds of light the furnace. Sunday morning is breakfast, camp clean up and then a communion service. At about noon we’ll give you a bag lunch and you can return to civilization.

It’s a pretty exclusive group with invitations only being offered to males over the age of around 13 – actual age, not emotional. Some of you have never shown up and this should be the year you stop with the excuses. It’s one weekend and it’s not like you haven’t made a bad decision about a weekend before. If you have been before you know it’s a pretty relaxed event and the only campground event where we do not ring the bell.

I can’t guarantee the weather, although Steve Thompson has, because with his new job he has some extra clout.

Invite a friend or somebody from your congregation. This isn’t church, but I certainly think it’s spiritual. And best of all, it’s a road trip.

I will start to track you down, so save me the effort by e-mailing me confirmation that you are attending so I can allow the cooks enough time to buy too much food. Please pass this along to people whose e-mail I don’t have and you think I should harass.

I need somebody to do the ice-breaker games on Friday night so please jump up and volunteer.

If you’ve taken the Registered Youth Worker training as recently as two years ago, please note that our policies and procedures have been updated.  It’s important that everyone take this training, even if you never intend to teach a children’s class or be a camp counselor.  We owe it to our children to be informed and have all of the current education available.

Calling all Young Adults! Come to Samish Island Campground for this annual retreat from 7 pm on Friday, October 17 to 12 noon on Sunday, October 19.

We will explore the theme “The Sermon On The Mount: Counter-Cultural Constitution” through classes, worship, and fun! Featuring guest ministry by Seventy Dan Gregory. Some of the highlights will include late night games, meeting new friends, and more! Our Saturday evening themed dinner will be Christmas in October with a traditional holiday feast, and White Elephant gift exchange!

We need photos of your congregation’s meeting place!

We are building the new find-a-congregation directory that will be part of a redesigned Community of Christ website (coming soon). The directory will include a photo of your location/church building along with the congregation information. Submissions need to be sharp, high-resolution photos, framed as a landscape (horizontal) with sky and ground showing. This will allow for any necessary cropping. E-mail photos along with your congregation’s name, address, mission center, and pastor name(s).
