Men’s Retreat at Hills of Peace

September 27-29

Attention males who fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • You like to eat
  • You wouldn’t mind spending a couple of days at Hills of Peace
  • You have attended previous retreats and can’t wait to sign up for the 2013 edition
  • You are intrigued by what Craig Martens has to say about living sustainably
  • You are alive

This year’s men’s retreat is being led by Craig, a team lead for the Northeast USA Mission Center, who lives in Ohio. He is going to share some observations on “Living Together With God’s Creation”  and give us the opportunity to share our ideas  with him.

As always the retreat falls on the last weekend in September, which in this case is September 27-29. When I get bored with the format, I’ll change it, so this year is going to have the same general schedule. Friday night is hanging out and failing miserably at some ridiculous challenge; Saturday is several sessions with Craig, several sessions with the cooks in the dining hall (yes, there will be pie) and the always-tame, always-predictable campfire followed by blood-sport card games; Sunday is a wrap up  worship service and shutting the camp for the winter.

If you have attended before, I hope you have planned to show up again this year because you make it one of the most diverse gatherings I get to attend. We need church members and their friends, men who are high school age and older (even if you occasionally act like you’re younger), fathers, sons, uncles, nephews, grandfathers, and grandsons.

The weekend will start at about 8 on Friday night and wrap up around noon on Sunday. While there is no guarantee for nice weather, previous years have been warm enough to make sure we are not huddled up around the campfire in the chapel.

If you have never been and are thinking this is the year give me a call or talk to a couple of guys in your congregation to get an idea of what to expect. It is a relaxing weekend, with lots of food, and a chance to enjoy the campgrounds. Craig is excited about getting the chance to come share with us, so figure out who’s driving and experience the only road trip sanctioned by Greg Goheen (I'm not sure if that’s exactly true).

I will start to track you down, so save me the effort by e-mailing me confirmation that you are attending so I can allow the cooks enough time to buy too much food.

This will our 8th annual attempt, we’ve got to be getting close to getting it right.

Dan

A mother took her little boy to church.
While in church the little boy said, “Mommy, I have to pee.”
The mother said to the little boy, “It’s not appropriate to say the word ‘pee’ in church. So, from now on whenever you have to ‘pee’ just tell me that you have to ‘whisper’.”
The following Sunday, the little boy went to church with his father and during the service said to his father, “Daddy, I have to whisper.“
The father looked at him and said, “Okay, just whisper in my ear.”
