General Questions and Answers about National Conference

To: All Canadian Members – Community of Christ

RE: Canadian National Video Conference – Saturday June 16, 2012

The Canadian officers of Community of Christ extend an invitation to you and your family as members of the church to participate in the Canadian National Video/Conference.

The instruction given to the church in recent revelation found in Doctrine and Covenants section 164 verse 7, speaks to a “worldwide prophetic church that must develop cultural awareness and sensitivity to distinguish between issues that should be addressed by the World Conference and those that are best resolved nationally or in other ways”. We find it appropriate to convene a national conference in Canada in respect to the federal bill C-38 of July 2005, granting same-sex couples the right to marry in Canada.

As a prophetic church, D & C 164 calls us to prayerful discernment concerning our understanding of the enduring principles and God’s Will. Two questions will be considered by this member conference, first is to determine the level of support for a change in policy to allow priesthood of Community of Christ to perform the sacrament of marriage for same-sex couples in Canada. The second question is to determine the level of support for a change in policy to allow for the sacrament of ordination of individuals in a same-sex marriage in Canada.

The 2012 conference will be historic. Any decisions of the conference will take the form of a recommendation and request for consideration by the First Presidency and Council of Twelve as a result of the dialogue and polling of the Canadian Members. As a member of Community of Christ, you are encouraged, to dialogue with others, to prayerfully discern and to participate with a desire to be led by the Spirit of God, the creator of us all. Conference information can be found at your local congregation, by calling your local Mission Centre and by visiting the website and following the tabs pertaining to the Canadian National Conference. www.communityofchrist.ca

This is a very exciting time in history for the Canadian Church. You are encouraged and welcomed to attend the conference. Save the date and participate.
